MediaTags - tagging behavioral events in digitized videos
MediaTags is a tailor-made software solution which allows to analyze digitized videos quickly and efficiently.
Basic Version
- In the basic version a view for the "Basic Analysis" of videos is implemented. You can comment the videos and do codings with three dummy categories with 5 x 10 subcategories each. You can e.g. transcribe the verbal content and/or code different kinds of behaviors.
Plug-Ins
The basic version can be upgraded by plug-ins for customized purposes. At the moment plug-ins exist for:
- FACIAL BEHAVIOR: The analysis of facial expressions with the Facial Action Coding System(FACS and EmFACS analysis by Ekman & Friesen)
- BODY: The analysis of gestural behavior (illustrators, emblems), head and body positions and movements
- MEDIA: Two plugins for media-analysis (MediaScope-categories by Schwab, Unz & Winterhoff-Spurk, 2005).
- RIAS: Roter Interaction Process Analysis System.
- The software is also adaptable to code all kinds of behavioral events by designing and inserting software plug-ins.
Integration of rating lists or questionnaires
- Questionnaires can be integrated into the software. So the coder can rate e.g. the emotional experience or other issues of the observed interaction.
DAS Differentielle Affekt Skala (Differential Emotion Scale)
- At the moment the DAS a questionnaire for the emotional experience of persons is integrated (Merten & Krause, 1993). Its 10 scales are administerd by 3 items each and are based on the DES of Carol Izard
Coding and Checking Facial Behavior
MediaTags is very useful while coding facial behavior but also in verifying and checking your data.
- Action Units are easily input within a specially designed coding interface
- The coding interface provides a syntax check to avoid troublesome searches for errors in the codings
- As result one yields a formatted data-file with the AU-codings ready for processing with statistical packages like for example SPSS or Statistica.
- Video-sequences related to codings already done can be accessed by a simple mouse-click
- The video-sequences related to codings can be compared very easily within a case or between cases to improve reliability of the codings.
The EmFACS/FACS coding interface
- In the EmFACS-coding window all Action Units are present with a header (holding the Action Unit) and an expander holding the intensity scores on the right side, and Unilateral, Assymetric and further scores on the left side.
- Double-clicking on the header labelled “9” inserts a new event at the current position (Time: 54:14) with AU 9 (Nose Wrinkler).
- A right click adds AU 9 to the currently active event (Time: 53:24). This is especially useful if you are coding Onset, Apex and Offset of an Action Unit.
Coding and Checking MediaScope
- MediaScope-Units are easily input within two specially designed coding interface.
- The video-sequences related to codings can be compared very easily within a case or between cases to improve reliability of the codings.
- As result one yields a formatted data-file with the AU-codings ready for processing with statistical packages like for example SPSS or Statistica.
Presentation and Analysis
MediaTags is also a very useful and easy to learn tool to present the data coded. Once you have done the codings for several videos you have the possibility to search the database for instances of special events. For the purpose of a presentation of video-sequences a list of selected events can be composed. From that moment on the selected video-sequences are accessible by a simple mouse-click on an labeled event out of a list. Screen-shots of the video-frames are automatically input in the database
Exploring the data by using the Storage View
- In the window “Storage View” you can see the events already coded.
- You can click on the button in the column “Startframe” to let the videoplayer jump to and activate the event.
- You can also jump to the “Apex” and “End of the Event” by clicking on the respective buttons.
Using the buttons of the player control
- To play and step through the video you can use the buttons in the player control or use the cursor arrows or the mouse-wheel.**
- The button "Play Event" starts the video at the "Startframe" and plays it until the "End of Event" is reached
- Startframe, Apex and End of Event can be set by the buttons in the player control
- The "Goto"-Buttons position the video at the start, apex or end of the active event
Tailor-made coding plug-ins for other kinds of behavior
The software MediaTags was developed to code all kinds of behavioral events in digitized video recordings (nonverbal behavior in general and all other kinds of events). To achieve that, the software is adaptable to special purposes by adding tailor-made coding plug-ins for the different kinds of behavior. Beside the above mentioned plug-in for coding facial behavior according a plug-in for doing media analysis is available. Integrated and configurable help The software allows the integration and configuration of a help system to explain categories and rules of the codingsystem in use.
Further features
MediaTags allows fast coding and retrieving of events in digitalized videostreams. A list of coded events can be scrolled through while the corresponding video frames are shown. The same can be done by a slider. Important for the coding of micromomentary behavior is the possibility to go through the video back and forward frame by frame or in slow motion. The video-window and the coding-window can be sized independently of each other and can be adapted to the needs of the coder.

How to test and purchase MediaTags
Evaluating MediaTags
To test the functionalities of MediaTags you can obtain an evaluation version of MediaTags. At the moment the plug-in supports especially the coding of facial behavior using FACS or EMFACS. You can evaluate this version by yourself. To download MediaTags, please send an email to info@gnosisfacialis.de.

Digitized videos played by MediaTags
In general MediaTags plays all videos, which are played by the Windows Mediaplayer installed on your system. With some formats you will experience difficulties when using slow-motion or relating to framenumbers.
Recommendations
- It is recommended to use AVI as videocontainer and a common codec like DivX to compress your video.
- If you are planning to use slow-motion, you should allow the compression software to add a keyframe at least ever 25 frames.
- If You experience difficulties or if You need help to produce digitized videos to use with MediaTags, please feel free to contact us.
Installation
Before You start the setup of MediaTags, please make sure that You have installed:
- Microsoft® .NET Framework Version 3.5 Redistributable Package
- Service Pack 1 for Microsoft® .NET Framework Version 3.5 Redistributable Package
The different Microsoft® .NET Frameworks (2.0, 3.0, 4.0) can be installed in parallel.
But You need Microsoft® .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
To avoid troubles please make sure that you also have installed the newest updates available for your computer.
